A week after that shocking report on criminal conspiracy and corruption in Anaheim, city leaders have remained eerily quiet.
Mayor Asheigh Aitken issued a statement after the report’s release, and Councilmember Carlos Leon renewed calls for a charter review. But as Voice of OC reports, most officials haven’t said a word.
Councilwoman Natalie Meeks last posted on her professional Facebook page on July 26, promoting the Anaheim Community Foundation. Councilman Jose Diaz hasn’t posted anything to his Facebook page since Fourth of July,
Councilman Steve Faessel last posted about the OC Children’s Expo on his Facebook page.
Councilwoman Normas Campos Kurtz last posted about city library programs on her Facebook page.
Councilmember Natalie Rubalcava — who benefitted from a data mining operation and potentially violated the City Charter — finally broached the topic after Voice of OC questioned city officials’ silence. She did not address the report directly but instead praised her boss, State Assemblyman Avelino Valencia, on Instagram for demanding a state audit of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce and Visit Anaheim.
The city council doesn’t meet again until Aug. 15. Some residents want a special meeting to be called before then, given the gravity of the report.
Former councilmember Jose Moreno is among those calling for an immediate gathering, so that reforms can be adopted without delay.
