A barrage of racist and antisemitic hate speech has forced another California city to end remote comments at its council meetings.
Claremont announced Wednesday that it would begin limiting comments to in-person delivery following vile screeds delivered via Zoom on Oct. 10. The city joins Walnut Creek, San Jose, Richmond, El Cerrito, San Francisco, Berkeley, Fremont, Redwood City, and Sonoma County in restricting comment delivery due to what appears to be an organized campaign. Some school districts have been subjected to similar screeds at public meetings.
“The content of these comments does not reflect our values as a community, and we will not stand by and allow our democratic process to be hijacked by hate mongers,” Mayor Ed Reece said.
