Scientists have developed a bright idea to mitigate the impacts of global warming. It’s called “marine cloud brightening” — a solar radiation modification technique in which saltwater is sprayed into clouds. Experts say it could create a cooling effect by reflecting more sunlight back into the atmosphere.
A team of scientists from the University of Washington were excited to experiment with the technology aboard the USS Hornet in Alameda. Then the public caught wind of the project.
According to The New York Times, the team deliberately kept quiet about the details in order to avoid controversy. That was their first mistake. The lack of transparency combined with natural skepticism caused an uproar.
After the Times’ story on the project broke, city leaders brought it to a halt. On June 4, the City Council will decide whether to resume the experiment or kill it indefinitely.
