A beachfront resident who yelled at a family to get off the sand outside her Laguna Beach home has caught the attention of the state’s Coastal Commission.
Viral video recently captured the homeowner roping off a section of the beach between her property and the shore, where a woman and her young son were playing.
“You’re in my property! Get moving now!” the woman yells.
Under the 1976 California Coastal Act, homeowners cannot stop people from using the beach up to the mean high tide line. Free access is generally understood to apply to any sand that is wet or damp.
Based on the video, the Coastal Commission determined the homeowner appeared to be blocking access to the public area. The letter demands that she stop. Otherwise, she could face fines of up to $11,250 a day for each violation.
