In a split vote, the Antioch City Council agreed to give Interim City Manager Cornelius “Con” Johnson the permanent position last month, despite questions about his candidness.
The vote was 3-2 with Mayor Lamar Thorpe and councilmembers Tamisha Torres-Walker and Monica Wilson in favor. Mayor Pro Tem Mike Barbanica and Lori Ogorchock voted no.
“The vote came with no national search, application process or internal candidates considered,” reports East County Today.
Johnson has been accused of inflating his resume by listing his last job as a San Francisco Police Captain without explaining that it was an “acting” position. There have also been questions about a bankruptcy filing, several foreclosures, and three employee complaints filed against him.
The vote to hire Johnson as interim city manager in November was also split 3-2. Johnson succeeds Ron Bernal who retired last December.
