Confused Venezuelan Migrants Arrive in Sacramento

Volunteers are working to assist a group of Venezuelan migrants who were shipped from Texas to Sacramento last week without any explanation.

“The men, who crossed the border in Laredo, Texas, had intentions to travel to New York, Florida or Utah and said they were confused as to why they were sent to California, where none of them had contacts or prospects,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

Some of the men weren’t even wearing shoes, according to migrant support organization NorCal Resist. They arrived days after another group of Venezuelan asylum seekers were shipped from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts – allegedly under false pretenses – by the governor of Florida.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has denied involvement with the latest shipment of migrants to Sacramento, according to the Times.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ office “did not immediately return requests for comment about whether its office was involved in flying the migrants to Sacramento,” the publication said.

Both governors have previously shipped migrants to Democratic-run states and cities in an attempt to make a point about the problem of illegal immigration.

Sacramento City Councilmember Katie Valenzuela issued the following statement to CBS13:

"The stories from across our country today break my heart, but I continue to be impressed by the way Sacramento steps up to welcome immigrants and refugees who arrive in our community. Our office and our city stands by to help the community groups on the ground however we can."
