The City of Los Angeles has failed to live up to its goals to recruit female professionals to high-paying positions, according to a new report from city controller Ron Galperin.
“The city needs to overhaul the way women are recruited, hired, promoted and paid," Galperin said. "Only by acting more aggressively to address the vast disparities that exist today will Los Angeles start to close its pay and representation gap and provide women with better opportunities to succeed in the future."
In recent years, the city has vowed to better represent women, to increase its female ranks, and ensure equitable compensation for women. But according to Galperin, female city employees still make 76% of what men make. They represent only 28% of the city’s workforce (no change since 2015) and took home just 24% of the gross amount the city paid its employees in 2019.
