A Glendale police sergeant arrested in a 2010 prostitution sting will receive more than $10,000 per month while on leave until his retirement in 2015.
The settlement between the city and Sgt. Vahak Mardikian comes after the sergeant and four other officers filed a lawsuit in 2010 against the Glendale PD alleging discrimination against Armenian officers on the force.
Under the terms of the settlement, the 49-year-old Mardikian will receive more than $150,000 in payouts until his retirement kicks in, in December 2015.
"There is always a risk of a bigger payout if a case proceeds to trial," Glendale City Atty. Mike Garcia said in an email to the Los Angeles Times. "In this case, there was also a risk of attorneys' fees if Mardikian recovered any amount of money."
Meanwhile, Mardikian is due in a Nevada courtroom on Oct. 22 after he was booked in the Clark County jail for allegedly offering an undercover vice detective $250 -- plus $25 in gas money -- for sex.
Gas money? Is that how they do things in Nevada? Anyways…
There are plenty of details about his August prostitution arrest, but those are just salacious and gratuitous. So here they are as reported by the Glendale News-Press:
“At about 2 a.m. on Aug. 8, Mardikian got up from playing poker at the Flamingo, where he was on vacation with male friends, and began talking to Gatus, according to a police report of the incident. After asking her if she was a cop — and denying he was one himself — the two began talking about what sexual services Gatus would provide for various prices.
After settling on a price and a service, the two departed, with plans to meet in the parking lot, the report stated. At that point, two other Las Vegas officers arrested Mardikian.
Wonder how that story found its way to the press in Glendale?
