The mafia’s reign in the Italian town of Corleone has become so pervasive that officials there have no choice but to start anew. The town’s council just became one of four in the southern part of the country to be dissolved by order of the national government because it's overrun by members of the mob.
No word on whether any public officials awoke to find a horse head in their beds.
The town’s name isn’t a coincidence. Corleone is supposed to be the native home of several fictional characters in the 1972 cult classic The Godfather, including Don (Vito) Corleone himself. It’s also the birthplace of plenty of real mob bosses too.
The dissolution of municipal governments is nothing new for Italy. It’s been going on since 1991 as part of a government crackdown on organized crime. Still, it might be a good idea to change Corleone’s name.
