The City of Coronado has hired retired Navy Capt. Clifford M. Maurer as its new Public Services Director. Maurer was one of eight finalists for the position, originally selected from a pool of nearly 100 applicants, and is expected to begin on June 23.
Maurer has spent nearly 30 years as a Civil Engineer Corps Officer for the U.S. Navy and has an extensive background in public works management, maintenance, construction and service contracting, environmental engineering, and strategic planning. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, having also completed the Advanced Management Program at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. His extensive resume includes leadership positions with the Naval Facilities Engineering Command’s largest field organization, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest based in San Diego, and an organization at NAVFAC Southwest which oversees facilities and real estate in a six-state area on the West Coast.
“The City of Coronado will greatly benefit from Cliff’s background as a Civil Engineer Corps officer and his leadership experience as a Navy officer,” said City Manager Blair King. “We are pleased to welcome him to the City, where he will oversee both the Public Services and Engineering departments.”
As the city’s Public Services Director, Maurer will oversee budgets with a combined total of $6.6 million, as well as more than 50 employees. He will receive an annual salary of $162,996.
