We‘ve seen some incredible acts of kindness in the midst of the coronavirus epidemic. Unfortunately, we’ve also seen the worst case of NIMBYism possibly anywhere, ever.
This story comes out of Darien, Connecticut:
Darien’s drive-through testing has been canceled, according to a tweet from First Selectman Jayme Stevenson. The testing was to start Thursday. Some neighbors expressed complaints with the location of testing so close to their home on social media.
In a press release from Town Hall, First Selectman Jayme Stevenson and Department of Health Director David Knauf said “We appreciate the important work being done by Murphy Medical Associates to provide testing to our residents at their other locations." – The Darien Times
Experts agree that more testing is critical to halt the spread of coronavirus. Symptomatic patients across the U.S. report that they’ve been unable to secure testing due to a lack of availability.
The proliferation of drive-thru test sites like the one that was slated for Darien were supposed to be a game-changer. Darien is just 20 miles from one of the country’s top COVID-19 hot spots, New Rochelle, New York.
And you thought California NIMBYs were bad.
