The Crescent City Police Department is facing a staff shortage. Officers are leaving to work with other agencies that are offering better pay.
One sergeant is heading to the Del Norte District Attorney’s Office and a senior officer to the Del Norte Sheriff’s Office, beginning April 30.
The department will have lost 42 percent of its staff by this point; only seven of the 12 positions in the department will be filled. Earlier this year an officer went to DNSO and another to California Highway Patrol.
Chief Ivan Minsal has already hired an additional person, but will now need many more to fulfill vacancies.
The city has already hired an agency to conduct a report in order to see what they can do to hire and retain officers. But in the meantime, Minsal is having his officers work overtime.
