This is a spooky time of year. With ghosts and goblins and all the John Carpenter film marathons you could ever dream of, the last thing you need to worry about is rampant crime in your city.

Enter Safewise. The home security website just released its list of the 100 safest cities in America  — an annual ranking based on the latest FBI crime statistics.

Here’s what it found:

Violent crime has decreased steadily over the past two decades, but American cities did see a slight uptick from 2015 to 2016. The safest part of the country is the Northeast. The Midwest is also a place where most people can feel relatively secure.

Lewisboro, New York was ranked as the safest city in America, with 0 violent crimes per 1,000 people and a property crime rate of 0.16 per 1,000. Hazen, North Dakota and Thetford Township, Michigan followed.

Safewise released separate lists of the safest cities in each state. These were the 20 safest locales in California:

1. Danville

2. Murrieta

3. San Ramon

4. Irvine

5. Aliso Viejo

6. Yorba Linda

7. Lincoln

8. Rancho Palos Verdes

9. Chino Hills

10. Mission Viejo

11. Menlo Park

12. Foster City

13. Rancho Santa Margarita

14. Laguna Niguel

15. Folsom

16. Moorpark

17. Sunnyvale

18. Rocklin

19. Central Marin

20. Palo Alto

Safewise’s list also tells us how crime and safety are faring in a North-South matchup. Of the 100 safest cities in California, 62% (31) were in Southern California.

Data is compiled and reported by Safewise. Report does not reflect statistics on all 482 California cities.
