Inglewood Mayor James Butts is back in the spotlight this week, but not for reasons anyone would want or expect. On April 30, investigators say his 30-year-old daughter Ashley Melissa Butts hired two men to carry out a brutal assault on her landlord at the Hyde Park home she rented from him.
Butts was arrested Wednesday on one felony count of assault, conspiracy to commit assault and first-degree burglary with a person present. She and one of the attackers, Israel Rios, now face up to 22 years in state prison if convicted.
Authorities say the attack was the result of an ongoing dispute between Butts and her landlord. She called an Uber driver to take the two men to the home, where they beat him with a metal baseball bat. One of the men also fired shots from a gun, but missed.
The landlord survived, but not without physical and psychological injuries. Speaking to the media, he implied that a sense of invincibility had contributed to the attack.
"The fact that she is the mayor's daughter and she thinks she can get away with it - that's the main thing that hurts," he said.
