A magnitude-5.7 earthquake struck off the coast of California Wednesday about 25 miles southwest of Ferndale and 40 miles southwest of Eureka. The temblor occurred at 1:08 p.m. and was felt as far away as San Jose, according to USGS geophysicist Julie Dutton. As of late Wednesday, no serious damage was reported.
David Walsh, an oceanographer with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center called the earthquake “sizable” but said it was not large enough to pose any tsunami concerns.
Wednesday’s quake came less than a year after a magnitude-6.8 hit 50 miles west of Eureka. That was the largest quake to hit the state of California since 2004. Like Wednesday’s temblor, it occurred further off the coast, minimizing the amount of energy that eventually reached land. As a result, no serious damage or injuries occurred.
