The Los Angeles Police Commission announced the hiring of an interim police chief Wednesday ahead of Michel Moore’s retirement. Dominic Choi, who currently serves as assistant chief, will take over on March 1.
Choi has been with the department since 1995. He has served as a detective, supervisor, homeless coordinator, chief of staff under Chief Moore, and has held roles in internal affairs.
Moore called him an experienced public servant “with extraordinary people skills and team building capabilities.”
Mayor Karen Bass praised Choi for his commitment to reforming policing, as well as “his strength of character.”
Choi is the first person of Asian descent to head LAPD.
