El Cajon Police Chief Michael Moulton will retire on Dec. 30, the city has announced. A search for his replacement is expected to begin soon.
Moulton has served El Cajon for 29 years. He was appointed police chief in 2019.
“Leading this department through the pandemic and the unprecedented challenges of 2020 was one of my proudest moments,” said Moulton. “The resilience of our officers and the support from our community helped us emerge stronger, and I’m proud to have been a part of that.”
Under Moulton’s leadership, the department implemented new recruitment tactics that led to the hiring of over 100 new officers. Police response times improved and community engagement increased.
“Chief Moulton has led with integrity and compassion,” said Mayor Bill Wells. “His leadership during challenging times and his commitment to innovation has been invaluable to the safety and well-being of our city. He will be greatly missed.”
