A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck near the city of El Centro after midnight Monday, touching off a swarm of aftershocks.
In the two hours following the quake, there were at least 16 aftershocks, 13 of which occurred over a 25-minute period. The largest was a magnitude 3.9.
The city’s “Mondays with the Mayor” event was postponed due to the seismic activity.
El Centro's earthquake swarm followed another So Cal temblor of moderate intensity. On Friday, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck northwest of Malibu. It was felt as far as Bakersfield.
None of the quakes caused major damage, but they do slightly increase the chance of a larger earthquake in the coming days.
