Redondo Beach is holding its first ranked choice voting election today — a brand-new milestone for Los Angeles County.
The offices of Mayor, City Attorney, and Council Districts 1, 2 and 4 appear on the Tuesday, March 4th ballot, as do several ballot measures.
Voters can rank up to six candidates for office. If any candidate receives a majority, they win outright. If no candidate receives a majority, the least popular candidate will be eliminated. Anyone who voted for the eliminated candidate will have their votes transferred to their second choice. The process continues until a majority winner emerges.
The candidates are:
Mayor
Jim Light (i)
Nils Nehrenheim
Joan Irvine
Jeff Ginsburg
Georgette Gantner
City Attorney
Joy Ford
Steve Colin
CD 1
Darin King
Rolf Curtis Strutzenberg
Brad Waller
CD 2
Chadwick Castle
Louis Burke
CD 4
Zein Obagi, Jr. (i)
Terri Hunt
The city of Cerritos is also holding an election for three at-large seats on the City Council (see a list of the candidates here). Voters will also decide on two proposed charter amendments. Measure J would require voter approval for changes to the general municipal election date. Measure K would “remove or modify provisions based on superseding and preemptive State law, increase Citywide operational efficiency by eliminating references to outdated business practices, and correct grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors.”
