Efforts to bring Bay area rent prices in line and protect renters from “no cause” evictions saw a number of triumphs and setbacks Tuesday. Voters in Oakland, Mountain View, and Richmond approved their respective rent control measures, while Measure M1 in Alameda, Measure R in Burlingame and Measure Q in San Mateo failed.
Tenant rights advocates lauded the victories where they did occur, citing them as evidence that renters are mobilized like never before. But the handful of defeats shows the issue is far from consensus, even in a region plagued by astronomical housing and rent prices.
