A makeshift memorial for a police K-9 who was shot and killed last weekend has been steadily growing outside Burbank Police headquarters. Someone even tucked a tennis ball into the hand of one of the bronze officers featured in a nearby statue — a fitting tribute to the fallen dog.
Spike the K-9 had recently celebrated his 4th birthday with his favorite treats. On Saturday, November 22, a suspect opened fire on the dog after running from police during a traffic stop. The suspect later shot at human officers and was killed by police.
Spike’s death has devastated BPD and much of the San Fernando Valley city. His story has also captured the hearts of a nation, with some national news outlets covering his passing.
The beloved Belgian Malinois was “known for his gentle nature off duty and his tenacity and dedication while serving" BPD said in a statement, adding: “Your mission is complete, hero.”
Spike was honored with a police procession on Sunday.
