Alameda County prosecutors have slapped former Fremont City Manager Mark Danaj with charges of embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds. Danaj is accused of making $18,000 in personal purchases on a city credit card.
Danaj resigned from his position six months ago. The city announced it had learned of the criminal case against him April 1.
“Following Mr. Danaj's resignation from the City in September 2021, discrepancies were identified with his use of a City issued credit card,” according to a City statement. “To ensure financial accountability and transparency, the Finance Director has asked the City's independent financial auditor to conduct an assessment of the City's purchase card program that will likely include an examination of policies and procedures and an audit of recent purchase card activity.”
