Lest there be any confusion, city officials in Azusa, California want the public to know that, as ugly as they may be, saggy pants remain perfectly legal. The Azusa Police Department was forced to clarify that fact on Twitter Tuesday after an online hoax was taken a little too seriously by some, resulting in indignation over a new ordinance that doesn’t even really exist.
The kerfuffle began after someone posted a fake photo of a sign purportedly from the City of Azusa on social media.
“Pull up your pants,” the insignia read. “No one wants to see your underwear.”
The sign referenced a faux ordinance number, which made it appear more legit to some. It also warned of a $100 fine for violators.
The enforcement date for the new law was listed as April 1, 2016, so it appears to be an April Fool’s joke that got off to a late start. Fortunately, the police department got ahead of the story just in time and most people kept their sense of humor about the whole thing.
