The City of Mission Viejo is awaiting a final decision on the fate of three City Council members accused of illegally extending their terms. That decision is expected to come on October 18. In the meantime, the City has been granted a stay from the state’s Fourth Appellate District, Division Three, delaying the members’ removal.
A lower court had ordered Mayor Wendy Bucknum, Councilman Ed Sachs, and Councilman Greg Raths removed from the dais by Sept. 30. On Sept. 29, the appellate court granted the City’s request for a stay. Both sides have been given more time to file information on the matter and are due back in court for a decision on Oct. 18.
“The City of Mission Viejo will continue to operate as normal and will preserve, maintain and protect the legal rights and duties of the public, the City and those involved in its unswerving adherence to the rule of law,” Councilman Raths wrote in response to the ruling.
