Move over, Washington and Colorado. California is about to make marijuana history with the nation’s first-ever museum exhibit devoted exclusively to weed.
The new attraction, known as “Altered State: Marijuana in California” is being hosted April 16 through September 15 by the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA). It will trace the entire history of marijuana in North America, delving into issues of policy, culture, medicine and just about everything else under the sun.
Specific displays at the museum include a collection of photographs known as the “selfie forest,” as well as a row of glass cases filled with actual pot. That’s perfectly legal because they’re technically in the possession of a certified grower, according to the exhibit’s curator Sarah Seiter.
“We’re basically just holding it for a friend,” she joked.
Seiter insists the museum has no stance on marijuana use or legalization, which seems a little hard to believe. Instead, the exhibit aims to be a catalyst for discussion from both sides of the debate.
“We’re a city that’s been very comfortable having these conversations,” Seiter added. “It makes sense that the museum would be the next institution to join in.”
Hey, we could think of worse things to do on a Saturday afternoon.
