Former Buena Park Mayor Sangjin Miller Oh was sentenced to six months in jail and three years of probation Wednesday for his role in a fraudulent child support avoidance scheme. The sentencing came six months after Oh was found guilty of five felony counts of perjury by declaration.
Prosecutors had alleged that Oh used fraudulent information on signed DMV documents in an apparent attempt to avoid paying child support. The illegal acts occurred five times between Sept. 23, 2004 and July 20, 2009 before Oh’s election to the council and included use of a fictitious name and birth date, as well as a denial that he had ever applied for a license under a different name. According to prosecutors, the false information was submitted with the intention of hiding assets under a false name so that Oh would not have to give child support payments to his ex-wife.
“No one is above the law,” said Susan Kang Schroeder, chief of staff for the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. “Honesty is the bare minimum of what you owe to the public.”
Oh was first elected to the Buena Park City Council in 2010 and appointed mayor in December of 2013. In addition to his sentence, he will be barred from ever holding public office again.
