Mike Morgan, a former longtime city council member and mayor of Camarillo, was killed in a car accident last Tuesday, according to the city. The crash also left his wife Donna with severe injuries. The two were on their way to visit their children in Reno, Nevada when the tragedy occurred.
Morgan sat on the council for 38 years and served as mayor six times. He was first elected in 1980 when Camarillo’s population was half of what it is today.
“The city we have today was largely built when Mike was on the City Council,” City Manager Bill Little told the Camarillo Acorn, adding that he’d “had a big hand in how the city was developed.”
“Mike Morgan spent many years serving our community in both an elected capacity and several nonprofit and church-related activities,” Camarillo Mayor Tony Trembley said in a statement. “He made a significant contribution to our city through his leadership and devotion to Camarillo.”
As a member of the council, Morgan fought to preserve the city’s agricultural land. He also spearheaded a growth-control ordinance that limited new home construction.
Morgan was 77 years old.
