In trying times, we all take comfort in the familiar. And that’s exactly what the City of Auburn is doing, one month after losing one of its city council members in a tragic plane crash.
In a 4-0 vote May 12, the City Council selected former Auburn city councilwoman Alice Dowdin Calvillo to fill the seat previously held by Bill Kirby. She participated in her first meeting last week.
Dowdin Calvillo isn’t just known to Auburn; she’s admired.
“I have to be frank with you, I’ve worked with Alice, I know how hard she works,” Councilwoman Cheryl Maki said, as quoted by Gold Country Media. “I’ve been in the trenches with her on a lot of difficult issues and we need Alice. When I had to weigh the differences, for someone who can just step right in, I think Alice is the person for the job right now."
Dowdin Calvillo sat on the dais between 1998-2005. She also served as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s chief deputy cabinet secretary and as chair of the Public Employment Relations Board. She is currently employed as the executive officer for the Sacramento County Civil Service Commission and serves on Auburn's Planning Commission and Historic Design Review Commission.
"There are many challenges ahead for the city of Auburn, and I believe my unique public sector experience along with my expertise makes me a strong candidate who can serve the city well during these difficult times,” Dowdin Calvillo said during the council meeting.
