Former Downey City Councilman and Mayor Mario Guerra has been appointed as Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army (CASA), a prestigious position equivalent to that of a three-star general. Guerra will report directly to the Secretary of the Army and promote good community relations with California and the Greater Los Angeles area.
The position has been described by Secretary of the Army Eric K. Fanning as “the connective tissue” that links Army servicemen to the people they protect. Guerra was inducted Jan. 9 at a ceremony in the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes. He gave an inspiring account of his path from Cuban émigré to public servant.
“I came to the United States as a Cuban refugee and immigrant at the age of 6 on one of the first ‘Freedom Flights,’ and I truly appreciate the many opportunities that this country has provided for me. I look forward to taking on this position and executing my duties with pride, passion and integrity.”
