Revered former mayor of San Leandro, Tony Santos passed away earlier this week.
Tony leaves behind a long legacy in the city as a progressive leader who fought tirelessly against racism.
According to the East Bay Citizen, he is noted as one of the city’s longest serving elected officials, first serving as councilmember from 1984 to 1992 and returning to serve in 2000 before being elected to Mayor in 2006.
Some of his many accomplishments include creating the Airport Noise Forum, helping San Leandro survive the Great Recession, and most notably, ending housing segregation in the city.
He is survived by his wife Melitta, two children and three grandchildren. He was 86
A viewing is scheduled for April 26 at Santos & Robinson Mortuary from 12-8 p.m. with a vigil at 6:30p.m. A memorial mass is scheduled for May 4 at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel.
