A Stanton City Councilmember who lost re-election in November is facing multiple felony charges for allegedly falsifying her nomination papers and then voting illegally in the election.
Hong Alyce Van represented the city’s Second District from 2020 to 2024. She allegedly moved out of the district in 2021, making her ineligible to serve as its council member. Instead of resigning, Orange County prosecutors say she lied about where she was living. They say she went so far as to drive to her old residence and walk to City Hall to give the impression she was still residing in her old house.
When it came time to run for re-election, Van allegedly committed perjury by falsifying her residency on her nomination papers. She then cast a vote in that election while registered under her previous address.
Van’s loss in the November election was resounding. Victor Barrios beat her by 19 percentage points. Instead of serving on the dais — if convicted — Van could end up serving six years in state prison.
