The City of Fountain Valley has announced the unexpected passing of its Fire Chief Bill McQuaid. He was 57 years old.
McQuaid died off duty on Friday, July 25. A cause of death has not been released. According to Fire Chief Tim Saiki, the chief passed during a bodyboarding trip at Huntington State Beach.
"Chief McQuaid was a remarkable leader who had an incredible ability to make everyone feel safe simply by being present,” Mayor Ted Bui said in a statement. “He led with unwavering courage, deep humility, and genuine compassion. Our entire community is grieving this profound loss together."
"Bill's legacy of selfless service and quiet strength will continue to shape this department for years to come,” added City Manager Maggie Le. “He cared deeply about his team and his city. His city and fire department family are mourning alongside the community."
McQuaid had served the Fountain Valley Fire Department since 1996. He was appointed Chief in January 2023. He is survived by his wife Tracy and their two daughters.
City facilities will fly flags at half-staff in honor of McQuaid. A formal procession will take place Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at approximately 11:00 a.m. The procession will begin at 1071 W. Santa Ana Boulevard in Santa Ana and end at 17911 Beach Blvd. See the route map here.
