Fremont Does It Again: City Honored for Excellence in Financial Reporting

The City of Fremont has taken home its 31st consecutive award for excellence in financial reporting issued by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). The award covers the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014 and represents the highest form of recognition for comprehensive government accounting and financial reporting, the city said.

“This recognition is aligned with the City’s commitment to transparency in our financial reporting and accounting,” said Mayor Bill Harrison. “Our comprehensive annual financial report is easy to read and provides the public with detailed information on how the City spends taxpayer dollars.”

The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting is valid for one year. But if history is any indication, the city can expect more accolades in the future. Fremont has repeatedly been honored for publishing an easily readable and highly organized Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) aligned with the standards and principals of the program. These include a general “spirit of full disclosure” aimed at clearly communicating the city’s financial outlook and encouraging potential users to make use of the report.

In addition to the award for excellence in financial reporting, Fremont was also among the recipients of the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the fiscal year beginning in 2014.

Editor's Note: For a full breakdown of the California municipalities that also received a GFOA award, see here. Use the filter options "CA" & "Municipality" to narrow the dataset to just California towns and cities.
