After a rough year, the City of Garden Grove will soon bid farewell to its top administrator.
City Manager Matthew Fertal has announced his retirement, effective Dec. 31. His departure concludes an established 25-year career with the city and more than three decades in public service.
“I have mixed emotions about my retirement from the City of Garden Grove,” Fertal said. “The past 25 years have been truly enjoyable and extremely gratifying.”
Fertal joined the city in 1989, working as Economic Development Director. He went on to assume the Community Development Director position in 1993 and was appointed Assistant City Manager in 2002. He has been serving as city manager for the past 10 years.
During his tenure, Fertal implemented a number of key development projects, including the Grove District – Anaheim Resort. Great Wolf Lodge, another project that Fertal has worked on, is expected to generate $8 million in annual revenue after completion.
Fertal’s announcement comes at a tumultuous time for both he and the city, however. He came under fire last year for allegations of nepotism when it was learned that three of his children and a niece are employed at city hall. Similar allegations had plagued former Fire Chief David Barlag, who ultimately resigned last month. A subsequent settlement deal between the former chief and the city has also become a major bone of contention for many residents.
