A huge win for the City of Gardena who received $8.5 million from the Proposition 68 CA State Parks Office of Grants and Local Services (OGALS). This project was accepted under the “expansion of an existing park” requirement.
An opportunity for revitalization of the existing park presented itself when the city acquired vacant rental housing buildings that had fallen into disrepair. The need for the expansion was, in part, determined by the failing infrastructure of the current pool and the influx of calls from the public sector inquiring when cooling recreation options will be available.
The plan for the expansion includes a new 25 yard, 8 lane pool and will provide space for a two-story multi-use community building for recreation, care, and services across all generations. To help reduce environmental impacts and related CEQA compliance, the City hopes to reestablish the highly desired pool at the same site and now has the opportunity to include parking lots for the Community Aquatic and Senior Center, an additional lot for ADA only parking, a large lawn with a winding path, picnic shelters, and exercise stations.
California Consulting’s Senior Project Manager Ashley Ramsey and Project Manager Shari Edghill strategically worked with city administration and staff to create the winning application. This incredible opportunity to contribute to the betterment of city lifestyle and well-being will not present itself for many decades to come due to the densely populated location of the City of Gardena
