Governor Gavin Newsom is giving cities and counties four years until his threats to withhold transportation funding comes into effect.
The Governor has declared to withhold transportation monies from local agencies if they fail to comply with housing goals. Newsom previously announced this would be his plan to get housing, but now he’s detailed it even further.
His legislative proposal “provides $750 million in support and incentives to help jurisdictions plan and zone for these higher, ambitious housing targets.”
The housing demands keep in line with his campaign proposal, but essentially puts him at war with local agencies struggling to meet them. Newsom has already spearheaded a lawsuit against the City of Huntington Beach for its failure in producing enough affordable housing.
The Governor has already received pushback for his proposal, which could’ve prompted this delay in execution.
