The Hayward Police Department is in mourning following the fatal shooting of one its fellow police officers.
Sgt. Scott Lunger, 48, of Brentwood, California was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop early Wednesday morning. The shooting occurred near Lion and Myrtle Streets after the officer attempted to pull over a man who was “driving erratically.” According to Hayward Police Chief Diane Urban, Lunger was shot just 45 seconds later.
"We lost a warrior today," Urban said. "We've suffered a tremendous loss."
Lunger, a 15-year police veteran, is the fourth Hayward officer to die in the line of duty. The last officer death occurred in 1987.
The shooting suspect, a 21-year-old Oakland resident with alleged gang ties, has been apprehended. He is recovering at a nearby hospital after suffering multiple gunshot wounds.
