Sweltering California residents will have to put up with the soaring temperatures for just a little bit longer. According to the National Weather Service, the state’s heat wave will continue into Thursday and Friday, but won’t be quite as intense once the weekend hits.
The City of Los Angeles hit 99 degrees before noon Wednesday, with parts of the valley already in the triple digits. Riverside hit 101 and San Diego remained in the high 90s for most of the day. With electrical usage in overdrive, some 15,000 Southern California electrical customers had also lost power by Wednesday night.
Northern California also continues to suffer from scorching temperatures. The situation is so bad that seven schools in the Campbell Union High School District in San Jose released their students early Wednesday to avoid overheating in non-air conditioned rooms.
In light of the high temps, officials are warning vulnerable individuals to take the necessary precautions by staying cool and hydrated.
“When temperatures are high, even a few hours of exertion may cause severe dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke,” said Dr. Jeffrey Gunzenhauser, interim health officer for Los Angeles County. “Others who are frail or have chronic health conditions may develop serious health problems leading to death if they are exposed to high temperatures over several days.”
