Mayors from California’s eleven largest cities gathered Wednesday to send an important message to state lawmakers and Gov. Jerry Brown: the homelessness crisis is deepening and cities need the state’s help to address it.
The attendees of Wednesday press conference are seeking $1.5 billion to address homelessness in their cities.
“Homelessness is the single biggest quality of life challenge we face in our cities,” said Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg. “Cities cannot do it alone.”
The mayors are supporting Assembly Bill 3171. It would require cities to match the funds, coming out to a total of $3 billion for shelters, housing and other assistance for homeless individuals. They have also called for use of the state’s $6.1 billion budget surplus to address the issue of homelessness.
