How Pico Rivera Plans to Crush Street Takeovers

Pico Rivera is cracking down on those obnoxious sideshows that have rattled neighborhoods and endangered lives, particularly since the pandemic.

The City Council passed an ordinance this month allowing police to permanently confiscate vehicles used in street takeovers. Under the new rules, just watching the event can get you a $2,000 fine.

“This proposed ordinance and enforcement options will provide the City with additional tools to address the issue of illegal street takeovers, deter such activities, and ensure that the roadways in Pico Rivera remain safe for everyone,” said Councilman John Garcia. “By taking action, we are sending a strong message that illegal street takeovers will not be tolerated in Pico Rivera and that the safety and well-being of its residents and visitors are paramount to the City Council.”

Sideshows or street takeovers began in the San Francisco Bay Area over 30 years ago. They’ve made a comeback in the past several years, largely fueled by social media, and have spread across the United States.

The car stunts aren’t just neighborhood nuisances; they’re dangerous. They’ve caused numerous injuries and often go hand-in-hand with the use of drugs, alcohol and firearms.

The ordinance passed by Pico Rivera is now among the most stringent in the nation.
