Crime, homelessness, and a high cost of living are pushing more Californians out of the big cities and into rural parts of the state. The phenomenon isn’t limited to techies working remote, white collar jobs. Increasingly, lower income folks are packing up their bags and moving too.
The Los Angeles Times profiled one such family. Luz Puebla recently moved from LA’s South Gate neighborhood to the city of Huron in the Central Valley.
“Where we live, we started to see more violence. More aggression. We used to feel confident when sending our kids to the local 7-Eleven or the corner store,” but it quickly became too dangerous, Puebla said.
She put out feelers and soon received a call about a job opening in Huron. The family put LA in the rear view mirror and never looked back.
Life in Huron proved challenging for Puebla and her kids in a different way. The lack of entertainment options and the distinct culture of the locals led them to feel disenchanted and out of place.
But a move back to Los Angeles is still unthinkable for Puebla and her family. They’ve set their sights on Fresno.
