Several hundred stocky pups descended on Southern California’s Huntington Beach on Saturday for a quarterly festival known as Corgi Beach Day. And, if you missed it, don’t fret because the event only seems to be growing every year.
Saturday’s canine attendees were estimated at more than 600, trumping a previous high of 300. The first beach day, held in 2012, only brought in a dozen or so furry friends.
Corgi Day beachgoers caught an array of adorable scenes, including a number of dogs surfing the waves. Many of them took to Instagram and Twitter to share the experience using the hashtag #SoCalCorgiBeachDay.
The event is organized by corgi owners Dan McLemore and his wife Kelly.
“It more started as a group of friends,” said Dan McLemore, but it soon grew into a viral phenomenon.
The Welsh Corgi, or “Corgi,” is a small type of herding dog which originates from Wales. It is famous for being the preferred breed of choice for Queen Elizabeth II, who is said to have owned more than 30 during her lifetime. While the Queen recently declared the end of her Corgi acquisitions, the breed’s popularity has continued to grow in the United States and is now the 22nd most popular dog in America.
