The Huntington Beach City Council is suing the state over a new law affecting transgender students in schools.
This summer, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1955. The bill prohibits school districts from notifying parents when a student shows signs of being transgender, such as using different pronouns or using a bathroom associated with another gender.
The city council voted to file the lawsuit Tuesday, September 17. The council also passed an ordinance declaring Huntington Beach a “parent’s right to know” city.
The lawsuit and the ordinance both passed 4 to 3. Councilmembers Natalie Moser, Rhonda Bolton, and Dan Kalmick cast the no votes.
