A federal judge has granted an injunction to 16 so-called “sanctuary jurisdictions,” which will temporarily protect their federal funding.
The Trump administration had sought to withhold federal money to these jurisdictions because of policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
On his first day in office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing Attorney General Pam Bondi and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to ensure these cities and counties “do not receive access to federal funds.” On Thursday morning, Judge William Orrick said the executive order is likely unconstitutional because Congress holds the power of purse. Orrick said the plaintiffs were likely to succeed in their legal case.
The plaintiffs include San Francisco, Monterey County, and the cities of San Diego, Emeryville, Oakland, Sacramento, San Jose, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz.
