L.A. continues the crusade on the solicitation of sex.
Councilmember Nury Martinez brought the idea to the council, which voted to send the plan to the City Attorney for further consideration.
The program would place license plate readers to photograph cars soliciting sex in known hot spots. A ‘Dear John’ letter would then be sent to the address where the car was registered in hopes that whoever checks the mail that day has some stern words for whoever is soliciting sex.
The program has privacy advocates crying foul, as the data from the reader could be used to glean quite a bit of info on the people in the vehicle. There is also potential for legitimate misunderstanding, as the system does not differentiate between real john and someone with real business in the area or someone lost.
