L.A. City Council Member Calls for City’s First Dog Beach

If one council member has his way, Los Angeles could soon welcome its first bonafide dog beach. But whether pet lovers will agree to use it is a different matter altogether.

Los Angeles City Council Member Joe Buscaino has asked the Arts, Parks, Health, Aging and River Committee to look into a proposal to open up Cabrillo Beach to dogs and their owners who have few other places to gather their furry friends. The reason, however, may concern you.

Cabrillo Beach routinely receives “F” grades for water quality from environmental groups like Heal the Bay. Of course, that hasn’t stopped families from trying to have a little fun down by the water.

"…today you'll find families down at inner Cabrillo Beach splashing in the water," Buscaino said. "We need to send a message to the people that beach is not safe—so my idea is to give it to the dogs."

That’s right. Buscaino quite literally wants to throw the dirty beach to the dogs.

Recreation and Parks and the Port will study Buscaino's proposal and report back on the matter in 30 days. He has also asked them to consider Long Beach, Huntington Beach and Malibu as models.

Would you bring man’s best friend to Cabrillo Beach? In a city where pets are often treated like a couple's first-born, we're not so sure.
