Los Angeles County supervisors agreed Tuesday to move Santa Clarita’s city elections to November of even-numbered years to coincide with the statewide general election. With the board’s approval, the city can now fulfill a major condition of a 2014 settlement stemming from a California Voting Rights Act lawsuit.
The move to even-numbered November elections is aimed at strengthening voter turnout. City officials are still hammering out the details of another major condition of the settlement, which calls for the adoption of a new cumulative voting method.
There have been questions about the county’s current ability to handle such a system.
“That will have to be addressed down the line,” said Santa Clarita City Attorney Joe Montes.
Santa Clarita’s next city council election will now be held in November of 2016.
