The Antelope Valley community is mourning the loss of one of its officers this week.
Authorities have confirmed that a 53-year-old Los Angeles County Sheriff’s sergeant who was shot during a suspected burglary Wednesday has died. He has been identified as Steve Owen, a 29-year department veteran who was working out of the Lancaster station.
Owen and another deputy responded to the burglary call around noon. The suspect, who is now in custody, is believed to have shot Owen before attempting to steal his patrol car. Authorities said he was on active parole at the time.
The fallen officer was a recipient of the Meritorious Conduct Medal and an active member of the community, including various youth activities. He is married to a member of the department’s Arson Explosive Unit and has two adult children.
“We forget how dangerous this job is. Steve was so brave," Lancaster Mayor Rex Parris said. "The Antelope Valley has lost a true hero today.”
