The Los Angeles City Council declared a fiscal emergency Wednesday for the first time in eight years. The declaration will allow the city to move swiftly on urgent cost-cutting measures, including furloughs for more than 15,000 city workers.
Critics of the move warned that the furloughs could drastically reduce city services and cut police patrols and response times. But the city is facing a fiscal crisis due to plummeting sales tax revenue. And despite the dire financial condition, police and firefighters are on schedule to receive raises soon.
Bob Schoonover, president of Service Employees International Union Local 721, called the furloughs “illegal” in a statement on Wednesday.
