La Habra Heights resident Sayre Weaver beat city council challenger Alex Villanueva to the punch and has requested a recount of the March 3rd ballots on his behalf. Currently at 935 votes, Villanueva rests a mere 19 votes behind appointed incumbent Jane Williams.
If the recount favors Villanueva, he will fill the second available city council seat alongside incumbent Roy Francis, who earned 1,030 votes. If the recount fails, Williams will retain her position, and Weaver is left to foot the bill.
In addition to expressing concerns about the narrow vote margin, Weaver cites a number of “odd things” that occurred during the election. As a result, she has requested a number of nontraditional items – including ballot materials, a list of people who participated in the March 3rd election, testing records from the voting machines, and surveillance video to name a few.
While Williams notes that Weaver is “well within (her) rights,” she as expressed hope that it will not change the overall results.
The recount is scheduled to take place Wednesday at 9:00 AM.
